QLD:Daniel's parents struggle with emotions
BRISBANE, Aug 14 AAP - The parents of missing teenager Daniel Morecombe said the arrest
of a man for their son's murder has been extremely difficult to handle.
Bruce Morecombe told reporters that he and his wife Denise have been waiting for the
day someone was charged over the abduction of their 13-year-old son from a bus stop on
the Sunshine Coast in December, 2003.
When they were told on Saturday they had mixed emotions.
"It came as quiet a shock yesterday afternoon," Mr Morecombe told reporters outside
their home in Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast.
"It's a very difficult place Denise and the family find ourselves in.
"It's a place you don't want to be in.
"It's an extremely difficult time and last night was not pleasant at all."
Police on Saturday charged the man with the teen's murder, nearly eight years after
Daniel, who was 13, went missing while waiting for a bus on the Sunshine Coast.
The man, who will remain in police custody until his court appearance in Brisbane Magistrates
Court on Monday, has been charged with murder, deprivation of liberty, child stealing,
indecent treatment of a child and interfering with a corpse.
Daniel disappeared from an unofficial bus stop under an overpass in the Woombye district
of the Sunshine Coast, on December 7, 2003.
He had intended to catch the 1.35pm bus to the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre to buy
Christmas presents for his family but he failed to return.
Mr Morecombe praised police and said the person who committed the crime picked the
wrong family to do it to.
Over the past eight years, the Morecombes have continually sought and gained publicity
to highlight the abduction of Daniel.

FED:Deporting Brit 'against ALP principles'
SYDNEY, April 17 AAP - The deportation of a British-born man who's lived in Australia
for 41 years violates human rights, lawyer Stephen Kenny says.
"I invite the prime minister to say: 'These are not Labor Party principles; we need
to change this law'," Mr Kenny, who at one time represented Guantanamo Bay detainee David
Hicks, told the ABC on Sunday.
Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Bowen has defended the decision to deport
Clifford Tucker, 47, who is set to be deported after his visa was cancelled because of
a substantial criminal record.
Mr Tucker failed the character test set out in the Migration Act, Mr Bowen told the ABC.
But Mr Kenny said the decision to deport Mr Tucker is wrong as he's "not a threat to
society" and has not been involved in any serious violence for at least 10 years.
Mr Tucker, of Adelaide, is now awaiting deportation at the Villawood detention centre in Sydney.
He came to Australia aged six and has lived here ever since, but has never taken out
Australian citizenship.
He has notched up a substantial criminal record including a 12-year jail sentence for
attempted murder in the 1980s and a conviction for assault in 2009.
An immigration department spokesman earlier said the government took very seriously
its role in protecting the community from unacceptable risk or harm from criminal conduct
by non-citizens.
The decision to cancel Mr Tucker's visa was affirmed by the Administrative Appeals
Tribunal last July and in February the Federal Court dismissed his appeal, the spokesman
said.
"All non-citizens must meet the character requirements of the act and if someone does
not, they may have their visa cancelled and be removed form Australia," he said.

A Boeing 747 is expected to fly in high capacity pump and spray equipment today from
Singapore to help fight a huge oil slick that's spreading off Western Australia's Kimberley
Coast.
The Greens claimed last night the oil and gas spill is much larger and closer to the
coast than previously reported.
Australian Greens senator RACHEL SIEWERT .. who's visited the oil rig from where the
spill has originated .. says a film of oil around the rig reaches from horizon to horizon.
She says it stretches at least 180 kilometres from east to west.
A drilling rig towed by two tugs has left Batam Island in Indonesia .. also heading

Fed: McGauran says he has no job other than MP
CANBERRA, April 1 AAP - Former Howard government minister Peter McGauran has played
down reports he will quit politics within weeks for a job in the thoroughbred industry.
Mr McGauran, the former agriculture minister, is expected to leave parliament before
the May budget to take up a position with the Thoroughbred Breeders Association, representing
some of the nation's top racehorse studs.
Speculation has been fuelled by a speech the Nationals backbencher gave to parliament
last month in which he thanked his wife and parents and expressed gratitude to the voters
who had supported him.
But Mr McGauran today said he had no employment or position other than as the member
for Gippsland.
"I am working in the electorate as my constituents rightly expect," Mr McGauran said
through a spokeswoman.
"I have strong links with horse industries but no position."
Mr McGauran is one of several former ministers expected to retire this year.
Peter Costello, Alexander Downer and Mark Vaile have all been considering their futures
since last November's election loss.
Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson wants any retiring MPs to coordinate their departures
so that the ensuing by-elections - expected to cost taxpayers $500,000 each - can be held
on one "super Saturday".
Coalition strategists want the by-elections delayed until after the May budget in the
hope that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's electoral honeymoon will have begun to wane.
Dr Nelson today urged the MPs to pick up their performance or move on.
"Every one of us who was elected in November last year, our responsibility is to work
our tails off to our constituents," he told Fairfax Radio Network.
"People who don't want to do that, whichever side of politics they're on, they just
need to have a think about where they are going."

Analyst Speak.(Industry Trend or Event)
The music industry is apoplectic, we are told, at the prospect of mass digital distribution over the Web. This is the same industry, remember, that was recently investigated by the Government for cartel pricing, led by the Obig fiveO; and the same industry which has an estimated Osuccess rateO for commercial releases of around 2%.Music is just one example of how established business models are being pushed to breaking point by changes in the commercial landscape, and incumbents are being threatened by upstarts playing by different rules. Having been forced into confronting new media, record companies are now having to find ways of protecting intellectual property.
The industry, it seems, is still fixated with the idea that music is about a middle-aged personOs CD collection at home, containing all those classic back-catalogue discs that have now been around for 20 or 30 years; have been resold to the same punter several times in several formats; and that continue to be attractive because the marginal profit on each unit is so high.
It was the build-up of these collections that supposedly kick-started the first Odigital musicO revolution in the 1980s E vinyl to CD. But whereas technology is still important, itOs not the only factor. Being digital does make a difference because the copy is now indistinguishable from the original. Illegal copying is therefore much more of a potential threat, and has been the focus of major activity to date, via schemes such as the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI).
But todayOs piracy could be tomorrowOs business model Egiving away music does work, as CDnow has proved by increasing sales through free downloads.
Instead of fighting a rearguard action to protect established and artificially inflated revenue streams, however, what more visionary companies could try to do is think about how music usage has evolved over the years, and investigate ways of meeting the demand not for a static set of physical discs, but for an ephemeral portable resource.
Increasingly, the economics of music is shifting towards greater time-sensitivity, particularly in the pop and youth markets, value is at a maximum now, and begins to depreciate immediately and quickly to zero. Call it obsolescence or fashion, either way it can be seen as a threat to established practises, or the opportunity to create new ones.
So-called Ostreaming musicO over broadband, always-on connections is obviously only applicable for certain fixed-location scenarios E in the home, office, club E and even then itOll be a while before the quality and cost of the network will be up to it.
With the proliferation of channels and devices now available for consuming music E from DTV to Internet radio E record companies have the chance to look beyond music as simply OsinglesO and OalbumsO and consider how it might be a more profitable utility.
Trying to protect the exploitative pricing models which have traditionally underpinned this massively redundant business is little more than stalling. Looking at the potential for music as a low-cost, user-centred service, which is smart enough to fit into and work effectively in myriad lifestyle situations, priced according to both the economics of digital entertainment, and the premium consumers are willing to pay, is one way forward.
If the Obig fiveO donOt start doing it, someone else will.
