Wi-fi link to improve studies

New Delhi, April 7 -- Students of Zakir Hussain College have reason to cheer as the college campus is set to provide wi-fi facility starting from the coming academic session.

The college has already put the system in place and wi-fi connectivity will commence once classes begin in July.

The college joins Hindu College, Ramjas College and Shri Ram College of Commerce as wi-fi enabled colleges.

The library of the college - the oldest in Delhi - is also set for a makeover.

"We are planning to make the library fully air-conditioned. It will undergo a complete facelift with better facilities for finding and issuing books," said Aslam Parvez, principal, Zakir Hussain College.

"It is great that we are going to get wi-fi from the next session. There are times when we want to look up something about the lecture on the internet but have to wait till we get back home. It is a much-needed step forward," said Madhumita Ray, a second year student at the college.

The college authorities are also mulling increasing the student strength by 100% in the coming years.

"We want more students to get access to higher education. We have many popular courses and the college is centrally-located. So, an increase in the number of seats will certainly be beneficial," said Parvez.

The college has already submitted a proposal for a new building in the existing campus.

"We are awaiting approval to build a nine-floor building with a conference room and multimedia facility, in addition to classrooms," Parvez said.

"The current number of classrooms is inadequate. If we get the approval, we will be able to take in more students," he added.

For the time being, the college has opened five temporary classrooms - porta cabins - for students as their number has gone up after the implementation of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota.
